This weekend we drove up to Portland. We were there to remember and celebrate the life of a beloved friend.

Portland is such a great city that whenever we visit we ask ourselves why we didn’t move there instead of Tacoma when we first got to the Northwest.

I only had the urge a few times to ask to be charged sales tax because I am a Washington resident. Sounds ridiculous, right? I worked at a restaurant when we first moved to Washington, and people visiting from Oregon would flash their IDs and demand exemption from Washington sales tax for the souvenir t-shirts they purchased. I always thought that was funny and extremely annoying. Once when someone said “I’m from Oregon! ” as I rung their total, I smiled and said “That’s nice!” I had no idea about this no sales tax thing. Then they wanted to speak to the manager. What did I know? I’m from Arizona where they charge 5.6%!
